Transformer Insulating Fluids

With more than 25 years of serving the Australian and New Zealand energy industry, we have built a reputation for excellent products, services, and customer support.

Our range of insulating fluids covers high performance, proven technology, and cost-effective naphthenic mineral oils, as well as specialty ester fluids for applications requiring biodegradability and/or K-class fluid for improved fire rating.

Naphthenic Mineral Transformer oils

Ergon’s HyVolt naphthenic oils are premium dielectric fluids meeting the latest requirements of IEC 60296:2020 type A and B.

Ergon’s naphthenic transformer oils HyVolt I and HyVolt III products made from virgin crude oil demonstrate superior oxidation stability and electrical properties while exhibiting non-corrosive behavior toward copper and silver and delivering excellent cooling for longer asset life.

Together with their low-temperature performance, this exceptional set of properties makes HyVolt suitable to all climates and the fluids of choice to meet the most demanding requirements from leading transformer manufacturers, utilities, and industrial users.

HyVolt products contain NO undeclared additives such as DBDS, PCB, metal passivator/deactivator or silicone.

Ergon Refining holds both ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental management standards accreditations.

HyVolt I

This Type B uninhibited electrical insulating oil is produced from severely hydrotreated naphthenic oil meeting the general specifications of Table 4 as defined in IEC 60296, ed. 5, 2020, and classified as TVBU.

HyVolt I also meet the latest Australian standard AS60296:2017 Table 2 General Specifications for uninhibited oil.

HyVolt III

This Type A inhibited electrical insulating oil is produced from severely hydrotreated naphthenic oil meeting the general specifications of Table 3 as defined in IEC 60296, ed. 5, 2020, and classified as TVAI.

HyVolt III also meets the latest Australian standard AS60296:2017 Table 2 General Specifications as well as the more stringent requirements for special applications.

Synthetic and Natural ester fluids

Please contact us to find out more about our new range, why, how, and where to use ester fluids.

Biodegradability: our ester fluids are readily biodegradable as measured by the OECD 301B method

K-Class fluid: with a fire point above 300°C, our ester fluids offer a safer higher fire rating for specific applications or conditions, and comply with FM Global requirements.

Nycodiel 1255

Produced in Belgium by Nyco, one of the world's experts in synthetic esters, this fluid meets the latest IEC 61099 for synthetic esters.

It is second to none and is also approved for MR tap changers in MR alternative fluids brochure (p10).

It has the lowest viscosity of all approved K-class synthetic esters hence delivering better cooling performance.

Nyco synthetic esters have been in use as insulating oil for decades and are approved by most global transformer manufacturers.

Additional Information and Key Terminology

Oil classification examples in the latest IEC 60296: 2020 ed. 5 standards:

  • TVBU = Transformer / Virgin oil / B type / Uninhibited, eg HyVolt I

  • TVAI = Transformer / Virgin oil / A type / Inhibited, eg HyVolt III

Miscibility: unsure of the miscibility of HyVolt I and III with another oil? please contact us.

Handling of drums and IBCs: for more information please request our handling guide.

Inhibitor (antioxidant): as per IEC 60422: 2017 for oil in service, it is recommended to monitor the level of inhibitor in inhibited oil as to ensure the oil oxidation stability remains strong to continue protecting your assets efficiently. When a top-up is required to bring the level back to max 0.4%, you can source the inhibitor from us. Please contact us for our guidelines.

Passivator (metal deactivator): for oil-filled transformers experiencing copper corrosion, passivating the oil to a maximum level of 100ppm can be useful to stop the corrosion reaction.

It is however generally not efficient against silver corrosion.

However, there is a lot more to be said about corrosion.

For more information on the passivation procedure and sourcing passivator, please contact us.

Used oil recycling: naphthenic mineral transformer oils last for decades and are fully recyclable. If you have used transformer oil to dispose of, please contact us for support.
